Not sculpture

Not sculpture is my ongoing collection of regular photographs capturing accidental sculptures encountered in the built environment. Reflecting my practice themes, these sculptural compositions often feature elements associated with construction, buildings and architecture. Man-made colour is frequently a catalyst, as is the element of unexpected juxtaposition.

I began noticing and sharing found sculptural compositions in the built environment during Covid lockdown walks in 2020. Subsequently I realised that I’d actually been capturing occasional ‘not sculptures’ for a long time prior to that and now this line of enquiry is a key element of my practice linking my installation, sculptural and photographic work rooted in the experience of physical space.

Not sculpture now extends to over 800 photographs in their online home in a set of Instagram highlights.

Not sculpture is also the basis for Sculpture Galleries of the Not Future - a new collaborative publication by curator Kerry Harker and artist Holly Rowan Hesson. Often capturing similar urban sites across the UK but from differing perspectives, the publication takes their respective Instagram projects #GalleriesOftheFuture and #NotSculptureHollyRowanHesson as a starting point for a conversation about cities, art and lived experience.
